Brief History / Overview

The Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration was established in year 2011 as an independent Department of study. The Department is transformed into an international hub for criminology and interdisciplinary research. Faculty member of the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration involves in high quality research in the areas of Criminology and Criminal Justice, Juvenile Justice, Human Rights, Victimology, Cyber Crime and so on. The department is providing consultancy in the areas of Juvenile Justice, Child Protection, and Human Rights to stake holders and various other government agencies. Ph.D. Research Students hold a Fellowship to their credit from University Grants Commission (UGC) and URF of Tamil Nadu Open University.

Vision

Our vision is to create a young generation who can serve as the integral building blocks of society in a challenging world. The students will serve as professionals with commitment, integrity, and work ethic in various institutions of Criminal Justice System, Corporate Security Industry, academia, etc.

Mission

  • To enable students to learn about the various aspects of Criminal Justice System, multiple sciences relating to crime, criminal behaviour, victims, crime prevention, and security management.
  • To enable students to be successful in their studies by maintaining a supportive learning environment
  • To prepare students to excel in academic or professional careers in fields relevant to dealing with crime and justice

Objectives

  • Develop students’ ability to understand the modus operandi of crimes and the variations involved in it; the approaches required to handle these circumstances; and to draw appropriate inferences from them.
  • Provide students with the knowledge and skill base that would enable them to undertake further studies in Criminology and related areas or in multi-disciplinary areas.
  • Make students aware of criminal justice ethics to analyze real life and hypothetical decision-making situations in the practice of criminal justice.

Postgraduate studies in criminology and criminal justice provide a pathway to professional advancement for those working in these fields. The courses are designed to provide an overview of criminological theory and research, the workings of the criminal justice system and allied organizations, insight into key policy debates and an understanding of research methods.

The courses introduce social and psychological explanations of crime, as well as contemporary debates in criminological theory. Beyond the core elements of the course in policing, community development, crime prevention, law and behaviour and social science research methods you will have the opportunity to study electives from criminal justice, research practice, policing, corrections and crime prevention

Ph.D in Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration

Master’s Degree in Criminology/ Law/ Forensic Science/ Sociology/ MSW/ Social Sciences or any other qualification recognized equivalent in such fields of study in University, with at least 55% marks (50% in the case of SC/ST candidates)

The PhD in Criminology is an advanced research degree, awarded on the basis of a thesis and an oral examination (viva-voce). The primary purpose of the PhD is the preparation and presentation of a substantial piece of independent and original academic research. Completion usually requires three years of full-time study, and Six years if studying part-time. Every PhD student in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration is supported by a supervisor. Supervisors are experts in their field of study and support scholars throughout the PhD. PhD candidates will be benefited from the advice and support of Supervisor who will be involved in progression through the various stages of the PhD, from the registration assessment exercise at the end of the first year through to the completion of the thesis.
