The School of Tamil and Cultural Studies was established as per the Resolution 10.3 passed by the TNOU Syndicate in its 10th Meeting held on 06.05.2006 with the subsequent assent of His Excellency the Governor of Tamil Nadu who is the Chancellor of the University. (Assent of the Chancellor Letter No.6299/U2/2010 Dated 20.04.2011) The School has been mandated to conceive, shape and present the curricula of its Programmes and Courses with the help of modern technologies. The programmes on Tamil language, literature, grammar and cultural resources are aimed at the present and future generations of Tamil population and those interested in Tamil related studies across the world. The primary objective of the School is to guide the younger generation of Tamils through academic and research programmes and assist them in implementing Tamil-based academic programmes/courses and research projects regular face to face and online modes.
The founder Head / Director/ of the School is Prof. S. Balasubramanian. Dr. M. Vaiyapuri has been working as the Assistant Professor since2006, and in 2014, Dr. S.Aranganathan joined as Assistant Professor.
Since 2003, when the University was founded, B.A. Tamil, M.A. Tamil courses were offered. later 2005 B.Litt. Tamil(2005), 2007 B.A. Functional Tamil, Diploma in Media Arts(2007), Post graduate Diploma in Tamil Research Methodology ( 2008) and Diploma in Theatre Arts ( 2017) were introduced.
Full-time and part-time in M. Phil., and Doctoral Research/Ph.D. Programmes have been offered since 2013 and 2014 respectively. Curricula are being modified for all courses offered by the School of Tamil and Cultural Studies from the academic calendar year 2020 and all the courses are to be offered with new syllabi.
The School Collaborates with Central Institute of Indian Languages - Mysore, Sahitya Akademi - New Delhi, Central Institute of Classical Tamil - Chennai, Tamil University - Thanjavur, National Book Trust of India, New Delhi, International Institute of Tamil Studies - Chennai, and various other institutions that are implementing Tamil educational programmes.
தமிழியல் மற்றும் பண்பாட்டுப் புலம் வழி தமிழ் மொழியின் தொன்மை, உயர்ந்த மரபு, ஓங்கிய புகழ், இலக்கியம், கலைகள், நாட்டுப்புறக் கலைகள் மற்றும் பண்பாட்டு வளங்களைப் பற்றிய ஆழமான அறிவை கல்வித் திட்டங்களாகவும், உயர்நிலை ஆய்வுகளாகவும் வழங்குதல்.
School of Tamil and Cultural Studies shall inculcate the deep knowledge about and high level appreciation of the rich heritage of Tamil language, literature, art, including folk arts and culture in the form of various academic programmes of study as well as cutting-edge research in the field of Tamil.
செயலாக்கம் தமிழ் மொழி, இலக்கியம், கலை, தமிழர்கள் - தமிழ்நாட்டின் பண்பாடு மற்றும் மரபு தொடர்பான படிப்புகளை நவீனத் தொழில்நுட்பங்களைப் பயன்படுத்திப் பல்வேறு நிலைகளில் வழங்குவதோடு, பிறமொழி இலக்கியங்களோடும் பிற பண்பாடுகளோடும் ஒப்பாய்வுகளை மேற்கொள்ளுதல்.
தமிழில் படைப்பாக்க, திறனாய்வுப் பணிகளை முழுமையாக வெளிக்கொணர ஊக்கப்படுத்தும் நோக்கில் நடைமுறை சார்ந்து, பன்னாட்டுத் தரத்தில் பல்வேறு வகைகளில் பயிற்சி மற்றும் ஆராய்ச்சித் திட்டங்களை தமிழியற் பண்பாட்டுப் புலங்களில் வழங்குதல்.
The School of Tamil and Cultural Studies in collaboration with the Mylai Tiruvalluvar Tamil Sangam has established a Thiruvalluvar Chair, for which a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 05.10.2021 that was also approved by the Syndicate. Thiruvalluvar is an ancient Tamil poet, who is the author of the great Tamil book called Thirukkural which contains 133o couplets. The Chair has a sum of Rs. 12 Lakh as corpus fund to conduct research activities on Thirukkural. The major activities of the Chair are as follows:

As per the direction of Government of Tamil Nadu vide Letters number 23608/H/2/2008-3, Dated 14.05.2009, 09.06.2009 and 25.06.2009, the University has established an Anna Chair in 2009 in the School of Tamil and Cultural Studies. Subsequently, the Syndicate has approved the Chair on 07.01.2010 vide 22nd Syndicate Resolution Number 22.8. Conjeevaram Natarajan Annadurai, famously known as Perarignar Anna was an eminent multifaceted personality and famous Dravidian Leader, who was a founder of Dravida Munnetra Kazhakam. He served in as Member of Parliament and become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He is a well-known novelist, dramatist, essayist and script writer. In addition, he was an eloquent, thought provoking and enlighten orator both in Tamil and English.
