School of Management Studies

Overview

The School of Management Studies was established initially among seven Schools under Tamil Nadu Open University Act, 2002 and came into existence in the year 2003. It starts operations right from the inception of this University with distinct curriculum and teaching methodology.

Vision

To impart high quality management and commerce education to enhance wide spectrum of individuals and transforming them to a successful business leaders / entrepreneurs who in turn will influence more people thereby lead to advancement of business society.

Create intellectual capital in terms of scholarly and system-based research relevant to its evolving techno-development context.
Foster application and activity-based learning for sustainable growth of learners.
Promote a global vision that promotes diversity, inclusion, and ethical participation in the interconnected society of business.
Forge meaningful collaboration with industry, academia, Government, and social sectors such that sustainable and innovative businesses are built which leads to fulfil the collective needs of various stakeholders of the university and society.

Offer consultancy and take up research projects related to economic, business and social issues.

Objectives

To provide the learners a solid grounding in the core competencies required in prevailing global and technologically sophisticated business environment.
To generate knowledge through functional and applied research, pertinent to management and its essential disciplines, and to disseminate such knowledge to the learners.
To put graduates on the fast track to advance their executive careers and enable them to adopt themselves to the emerging, changing and challenging global scenario.
To enhance the decision-making skills and managerial competence of working managers through innovative and advanced management education programmes and providing opportunities for ongoing learning to upscale.
To strengthen industry-institute interface through association, consultancy and participation in skill development programmes.
To analyse the possible avenues for collaboration with Entrepreneurs, Business organisations, Institutions and other agencies for designing, developing and delivering the programmes and consultancies according to their need.
To focus on the service sector which is consistently on the growth perspective, emphasizing on professional standards in effective delivery of service systems.

Functions

The following are the important functions of the School:

The School continuously working hard for enhancing the quality of teaching and learning resources.
Consistently taking efforts to meet the learning style/needs of learners.
Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the teaching-learning system for reaching unreached learners.
Identification of need based academic programmes at different level (Certificate/Diploma/Graduation/PG Diploma/Post Graduation).
Planning and designing the structure of the academic programmes according to the norms stipulated in the UGC's ODL regulations.
Forwarding the designed programme structure for expert opinion for enhancing the quality.
Developing the curriculum for designed programmes and placing before the Board of Studies for its approval.
Indentifying the subject experts for entrusting the course development work in Self Learning format.
Undertaking the editing and reviewing work of the course materials developed by the subject experts.
Making Camera Ready Copy (CRC) by utilising skilled personnel in-house/out source for printing.
Requesting the Material Production and Distribution Division for placing printing order of course materials.
Scrutinising the printed materials for its correctness and quality and requesting the Material Production and Distribution Division for distribution to the learners.
Preparing test question papers for all the courses under the programmes of study offered under the school for assessing and awarding marks for continuous assessment.
Taking tireless efforts to redress the grievance of the learners within the School and also with other divisions of the University.
Receiving, Scrutinising and Approving project proposal which consisting the details of guide and synopsis for undertaking project report preparation.
Coordination of various activities with various Schools of Study for effective service delivery.
Coordination of various activities with Divisions of University such as Administration, Students Registration & Evaluation, Student Support Services, University Library and Material Production & Distribution for effective delivery of service to all the stake holders of the University.
Guiding the Research Scholars for undertaking Innovative and Socially relevant Comtemporary Issue.
Organising need-based seminar/workshop/training/conference/symposia for enhancing the competencies.

Digital library which connecting with all the state universities library and more than 5000 management and Commerce title books in hard copy and Management Journals available for learners' reference.
Providing counselling for career guidance to the needy learners in face to face and through social media.
Providing needy information to the learners to choose the functional/sectoral elective course which is suits to their job/profession in the Second Year M.B.A programme.
Facilitating the learners to undertake worthy project work to gain field experience.
