TNOU was established by an Act of the Tamil Nadu State
Legislative Assembly in 2002, which means it is a Government University.

TNOU is listed in the University Grants Commission (UGC) - a

TNOU receives funds from the Distance Education Council
(DEC), an apex coordinating agency established through the Union Ministry of
Human Resources Development (MHRD) to monitor quality in the distance
education provision in the country. This means TNOU is a Central Government
recognized University.

and a member of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU).
