Legitimacy of TNOU      

  • TNOU was established by an Act of the Tamil Nadu State Legislative Assembly in 2002, which means it is a Government University.

  • TNOU is listed in the University Grants Commission (UGC) - a copy of the UGC Circular is attached.

  • TNOU receives funds from the Distance Education Council (DEC), an apex coordinating agency established through the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD) to monitor quality in the distance education provision in the country. This means TNOU is a Central Government recognized University.

  • TNOU is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and a member of the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU).

  • TNOU Programmes have the recognition of the appropriate authorities in the country.

  • The operational jurisdiction of TNOU is across the world, though it currently concentrates on Tamil Nadu.
