Dr. K. Murugan joined the Tamil Nadu Open University, Chennai, India in August 2004 as Professor and Founding Head of the School of Humanities and the Founding Director in charge of the Student Support Services Division. He was also Registrar in-charge at the University for some time in 2009. Immediately prior to this assignment at the TNOU, he was working for the University of the West Indies Distance Education Centre (UWIDEC), Barbados as Curriculum Development Specialist (1998-2004). He was one of the earliest who joined the Indira Gandhi National Open University at its inception in 1986 and associated with it until December 1997. A regular at ELT/ODL conferences, he is widely published as articles, book reviews and reports (27) in the national and international professional journals and has contributed about 60 chapters/textbooks in ELT and ODL. He has worked/visited 25 countries, giving key note/special addresses or presenting research papers at more than 50 conferences. He has conducted more than 250 ELT/ODL workshops/orientation programmes. He has been on 32 Committes/Professional Bodies including Editorial/Review Boards of IJOL (Indian Journal of Open Learning, India) and IRRDOL (International Review of Research in Distance and Open Learning, Canada). He has been an active consultant for the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and has undertaken consultancy projects for UNESCO, CIDA, PAHO, OAS, etc. Professional awards he received include CIEFL Merit Scholarship, UGC-Fellowship, COL/UNESCO travel/study bursary, etc. He has been an Examiner for PhD in ELT and ODL and has guided 5 M.Phil scholars. Armed with a Master’s Degree in English, he joined the erstwhile Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL), Hyderabad, for PGDTE. Subsequently, he also received his M.Litt and PhD from the same Institute. |
